About the Aircraft: Five prototypes were built of this vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The XC-142A combined the tilt-wing concept of the Hiller X-18 with the Ryan VZ-3RY "Vertiplane." It was designed to transport troops, or haul cargo, for the U.S. Armed Forces. The aircraft had counter-rotating propellers, and an interconnecting, three-bladed variable pitch tail-rotor system.
